Material sourcing guide

Door and window hardware, itemized by opening and operation

Separate operating hardware from the frame and leaf package so each opening can be compared by function, not appearance alone. Tie handles, hinges, locks, closers and restrictors to unique opening references, operation type and the project-prescribed performance requirement.

01 / Materials & uses

Start with the right material groups.

Operating and locking sets

Define the complete handle, cylinder, lock, strike and keep set for each opening. State whether the set serves a single leaf, multi-point lock or master-key arrangement.

Hinges, pivots and carrying hardware

List hinge or pivot type, fixing base and leaf weight basis for each door or window. Separate butt hinges, concealed hinges, friction stays and pivot sets by opening reference.

Closers, restrictors and coordination items

Identify closers, floor springs, hold-open units, restrictors, finger protection and interface plates required for each location and leaf configuration.

02 / Package boundaries

A material price is only part of the package.

Your material schedule
01Operating and locking sets
02Hinges, pivots and carrying hardware
03Closers, restrictors and coordination items

One schedule, clearly separated scopes. This is a request outline, not an installation drawing.

Included materials

State the hardware items supplied for each opening, including finish, handing and the assembly each item serves.

Connections & interfaces

Allocate responsibility for fasteners, plates, seals, power transfer and preparation between the hardware supplier and the joinery package.

Confirm separately

Confirm separately whether installation, commissioning, keying and maintenance material are included or excluded from the hardware supply.

03 / A comparable request

Six details that make offers clearer.

Product designation and duty requirement
Enter the exact product reference or project-prescribed performance and duty classification the hardware must meet.
Opening reference
Attach the current door and window schedule and keep the same opening IDs in every hardware line.
Leaf weight and width basis
State the leaf mass and width basis used for hinges, pivots, closers and restrictors.
Operation and handing
Define single or double action, opening direction and handed version for each item.
Finish and exposure
Request the specified finish, corrosion expectation and interior or exterior location for every hardware set.
Kit completeness
Ask the supplier to list the included screws, keeps, cylinders, plates and any items quoted separately.
Illustrative request lines
Item & descriptionQuantity
H-01Concealed hinge set for door opening D-07; leaf mass and width basis stated in the enquiry.8 sets
H-02Floor spring and pivot set for double-action public entrance; finish and cover plate per approved sample.4 sets

Example quantities only; no live prices or supplier offers. Use your project schedule for final values and ask suppliers to list deviations.

04 / Compare the whole offer

Three checks before you decide.

Opening-to-hardware alignment

Compare every hardware line against the opening schedule, handing and leaf basis before reviewing totals.

Set contents

Confirm the supplier identifies all fasteners, keeps, strike plates, cylinders and covers included or omitted in each set.

Finish and location

Check the finish reference and interior or exterior location are stated consistently across alternatives.

05 / Practical questions

Details worth clarifying early.

How do I distinguish a complete locking set from a handle-only item?

Request the line to itemize the handle, cylinder, lock body, strike and keep. A handle-only price is not comparable with a full operating and locking set.

Does hinge selection depend on leaf weight and width?

Yes. Ask suppliers to state the leaf mass and width basis used so hinges, pivots and closers can be checked against the approved opening schedule.
