Plan surface drainage as a distinct package: channels, gratings, end caps, sumps and connection pieces. Separate the drainage line from paving, concrete and buried pipework so each item can be quoted against the approved project detail.

Channel runs and gratings
Group linear channels, gratings and channel access components by location. Clarify whether the request covers the full channel system, bedding materials or surface components only. List separate inspection chambers in their own package.
Connection and outlet pieces
List end caps, outlet connections, silt traps and transition units separately. State the pipe diameter and direction to avoid mixing outlet work with the channel run.
Frames, grates and load exposure
Identify the required grate type, material and load exposure for each zone. Separate pedestrian, vehicle and edge zones instead of requesting one general drainage package.

- Product designation and project requirement
- Give the specified channel system, grate material and the project-prescribed performance or size reference. Avoid using a colour-only description.
- Channel profile and internal width
- Give channel width, depth, levels and any design flow requirement from the approved drainage design. State whether suppliers should quote the complete system or individual components.
- Grate type and load exposure
- Identify the grate pattern, material and traffic zone. Distinguish pedestrian areas from vehicle and edge loading conditions.
- Run lengths and unit basis
- Show lengths in metres and components in pieces. Separate straight runs, corners and outlet positions so allowances are clear.
- Outlets and connections
- Specify outlet direction, pipe size and connection type. Ask the supplier to identify the matching adapter or spigot arrangement.
- Finish and environment
- State the exposure condition and required finish. Confirm whether a particular material grade or protective treatment is specified.

Load exposure and location match
Request documentation matching the complete offered channel and grate system to the project-specified load requirement and location. Flag departures for project approval before accepting a substitution.
Outlet and pipe interface
Confirm the outlet size, direction and connector type. Ask how the supplier proposes to link the drainage line to the buried pipework.

How should I describe the route along kerbs and edges?
