Turf and lawn materials
Procure living ground cover as a measurable package: grass species, growth form, growing media, edging and temporary protection. Separate the lawn area from hardscape and irrigation connections so suppliers respond to the specified finish.
Start with the right material groups.
Rolled turf and large grass areas
For rolled-turf zones, state the grass variety, roll dimensions and specified condition at delivery. Coordinate harvest, delivery and laying with the prepared planting-soil area.
Seed, growing media and repairs
For seeded or overseeded lawns, separate seed mix, starter fertiliser, topsoil and mulch components. Describe repair areas by measured patch rather than a single bag allowance.
Edging and interface products
List specified lawn edging, root barriers, drainage transitions and temporary protection at paving, planters and tree pits. Assign each item to the lawn or adjacent package once.
A material price is only part of the package.
One schedule, clearly separated scopes. This is a request outline, not an installation drawing.
Included materials
Supply rolled turf, seed, growing media, topdressing, edging and protection. Measure lawn areas separately from planting beds and hardscape.
Connections & interfaces
Define interfaces with irrigation lines, surface drainage, tree pits, kerbs and edge restraints. Confirm which interfaces sit in the lawn package.
Confirm separately
Confirm preparation, unloading, laying, watering, establishment mowing and waste removal individually. Supply does not imply ongoing maintenance.
Six details that make offers clearer.
- Product designation and grass type
- State the exact turf variety, seed blend or reinforcement system required by the project specification, not only a colour description.
- Intended use and seed quantity
- State the project lawn use and required finish. For seed, include blend proportions, batch information, requested test documentation and mass quantity based on the project seeding schedule.
- Growth form and roll details
- For rolled turf, record roll width, length, thickness and harvest-to-lay age window. For seed, state coating or treatment where applicable.
- Growing medium and bedding
- Define the approved topsoil, sand or amendment layer and depth required beneath the grass. Ask for the supplier's composition information.
- Edging, root containment and protection
- List lawn edging, root barriers and temporary surface protection. Include connection details at paving, planters and drainage channels.
- Delivery phasing and freshness limits
- Agree delivery sequence, time from harvest or mixing, and storage limits. State who accepts, waters and lays the delivered material.
| Item & description | Quantity |
|---|---|
| TRF-01Rolled turf for main lawn area; variety, roll dimensions and harvest window per landscape specification. | 420 m² |
| TRF-02Lawn edge restraint at paving boundary; profile and length measured separately from the turf area. | 65 m |
Example quantities only; no live prices or supplier offers. Use your project schedule for final values and ask suppliers to list deviations.
Three checks before you decide.
Area basis and measurement method
Compare how quoted area is measured: finished lawn only, or including edge laps and cutting waste. Confirm the same boundary set is used.
Freshness and delivery state
For turf, confirm harvest time and supplier-stated transport, storage and laying conditions. For seed, compare batch details and product documentation. Coordinate delivery with the responsible landscape team.
Interfaces vs separate packages
Verify whether irrigation heads, drainage strips, edge fixings and root barriers sit within the lawn quote or in adjacent packages.
Details worth clarifying early.
Should rolled turf and seeded lawn be requested together?
Use separate line items: turf by area and seed by blend and mass linked to the planned lawn area. Define soil preparation, initial watering and establishment care for both; confirm which services the offer includes.
How are lawn edges counted when the grass meets paving?
Measure the edge length and profile separately. Specify whether the restraint, drainage transition and any root barrier are included in the turf order.
